TEACHING VOCABULARY TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 21 PALU THROUGH GENRE-BASED APPROACH


Abstrak

Karnila (12.06.3.1.045). “Teaching Vocabulary To The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 21 Palu Through Genre-Based Approach”. Under the supervision of Abdul Ghani Hali and Muhammad Arid.
The research question is “Can the application of Genre-Based Approach be effective to teach vocabulary to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Palu?” the research aimed to prove if Genre-Based Approach is effective to develop the ability of the students in learning vocabulary. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Palu which was divided into two classes. The sample of this research was the grade VIII students of class B of SMP Negeri 21 Palu. The researcher applied a pre-experimental research design. The researcher employed cluster random sampling technique and the number of sample is 16 students. The data were collected by using two kinds of instruments: test and questionnaire. The data of test were analyzed statically and the data of questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. The result of the data analysis shows that there is a significant difference between the result of the pre-test and post-test. This is proved through testing hypothesis by applying 0.05 level of significance 15 (16-1) degree of freedom (df). The researcher foundes that t-counted value (12.61) is greater than the value of the t-table (1,753). The hypothesis is accepted. It is concluded that the use of Genre-Based Approach is effective in teaching vocabulary of the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 21 Palu.
