Abstrak

Megawati, 11.1.06.3.1.032, Improving the Students’ Ability in Using Simple Past Tense at the Eighth Grade of MTs Syekh Lokiya Towale through Recount Text. Skripsi, Palu: English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Palu, under the supervision of Muh. Asri Hente and Sahril, 2017.

The objective of this research was intended to find out whether the application of recount text can improve the students’ ability in using simple past tense at the eighth grade of MTs Syekh Lokiya Towale or not. This research was a pre- experimental research design consisting of one group pre-test and post-test. There were two variables of this research. The independent variable was the application of recount text and the dependent variable is the students’ ability in using simple past tense at the eighth grade of MTs Syekh Lokiya Towale. The population of this research was eighth grade students of MTs Syekh Lokiya Towale consisting of two classes VIIIA and VIIIB. The sample of this research was selected by using simple random sampling technique and the selected class was VIIIB consisted of 20 students. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test in order to measure the students’ ability in using simple past tense before and after applying recount text. The researcher analyzed the data statistically. The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in the post-test (55.1) was higher than pre-test (35.8). To find out the significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test, the researcher compared the value of t-counted and t-table by applying 0.05 level of significance at 19 degree of freedom (20-1=19). The researcher found that the t-table was 1.729. It showed that the t-counted (6.69) was higher than the t-table (1.729) and the hypothesis was accepted. The researcher concluded that, applying recount text can improve the students’ ability in using simple past tense at the eighth grade of MTs Syekh Lokiya Towale.
