IMPROVING THE ABILITY OF GRADE VIII STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 6 PALU TO WRITE RECOUNT TEXT USING PHOTOGRAPHS


Abstrak

Fitriyani Ghazali,13.1.06.3.1.001, Improving the Ability of Grade VIII Students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu to Write Recount Text using Photographs, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muhammadiyah University, Palu, under the Supervision of Sudarkam R. Mertosono and Fikriani A.Omolu.
The objective of this research is to find out whether using Photograph can improve the the ability of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu to write recount text or not. The problem of this research is the difficulty of the students to write recount text. This research applied a quasi experimental research design consisting of two classes namely experimental and control class. Both of the classes were given pretest and posttest. There are two variables of this research. The independent variable is Photograph and the dependent variable is students’ ability in writing recount text. The population of this research was the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu in the 2016/2017 academic year. The sample of this research was selected by using purposive sampling technique. The selected class was VIII D as the experimental class and VIII B as the control class. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted pretest and posttest in order to measure the students’ ability to write recount text before and after applying Photograph. The researcher analyzed the data statistically. The result of the test shows that the mean scores of the pretest of the experimental group and the control group are 37.1 and 32.73 respectively. The result of the experimental group’s posttest increases significantly where the mean score of the posttest of the experimental group (75.6) is greater than the mean score of the control group’s posttest (52.83). To find out the significant difference between the pretest and the posttest, the researcher compared the value of t-counted and t-table by applying 0.05 level of significance for two-tailed test with 58 degree of freedom (60-2=58), the researcher found that the t–table is 2.002. It means that the t-counted (4.239) is higher than the t-table (2.002) and the hypothesis is accepted. By looking at the progress of the students’ achievement in writing recount text, it can be concluded that using Photograph can improve the ability of the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu to write recount text.
